Direct support professionals (DSPs) are people who work directly with people with physical disabilities and/or intellectual disabilities with the aim of assisting the individual to become integrated into his /her community or the least restrictive environment. A direct support professional is a person who assists an individual with a disability to lead a self-directed life and contribute to the community, assists with activities of daily living if needed, and encourages attitudes and behaviors that enhance community inclusion. A DSP may provide supports to a person with a disability at home, work, school, church, and other community places. A DSP also acts as an advocate for the disabled individual, in communicating their needs, self-expression and goals.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Assist with daily living skills (e.g., lifting, transferring, toileting, personal hygiene, laundry, meal preparation).
- Promote appropriate community integration and social interaction (e.g. visiting family, friends, church/temple, etc).
- Implement outcomes developed through a Support Plan.
- Complete paperwork as assigned including documentation (e.g., incident reports, outcomes, log entries).
- Administer and record medications pursuant to State and Agency requirements, where applicable. With valid APD training Medication Administration Fl Code 65 G-7.
- Accompany residents on medical appointments when needed.
- Attend all meetings and in-services as requested by supervisor.
- Maintain living environment in accordance with D.D.A. regulations and health department standards.
- Provide Transportation to our consumer as needed.
- Make oneself available in emergency situations as the need arises.
- Work cooperatively with professional and paraprofessional staff in the interest of the consumer.
- Communicate with and update the Waiver Support Coordinator on a regular basis.
- Assist the consumer with recreational, cultural and vacation plans of his/her choice.
- Provide independent and functional living instructions to the consumers.
- Complete all state required trainings.
- Assist with shopping (e.g., food, clothes).
Education and Experience:
- High School Diploma or G.E.D. Required.
- Must have valid driver’s license and a clean driving record.
- Must be able to work independently.
- Must have 1 year of experience with Disable Children/Adult, Nursing Home or Home Care.
